Collage Art

Today in the Oak room children explored visual arts through the creation of unique collage art pieces. Children followed the collage sequence to create their pieces; plan piece with collage materials and gluing them prior to their planning.  To create their pieces they were able to explore a variety of materials such as colored glass pieces, tissue paper squares, plastic noodles and dry natural materials. Through this activity children were able to increase their awareness of color, line, form, texture, space and design in their artwork. During the creation process children were able to communicate about their pieces and to express where their ideas came from.
I'm not sure what i want to make but this is a wave.. and the colors look like the sky. Maybe i can make a picture of outside!- David

I wanted to make something colorful, this will be a happy picture because it's colorful. - Ainsley

Musical Guest!

Today during small group, Tolga Kaya, Ela's dad, came in and sang the group some songs.  First he showed the children where Turkey is on the globe. He asked the children how they think they could get from Michigan to Turkey. "Motorcycle," said Carter K. "Car," said Daniel.  He then sang songs in Turkish. The children sang the alphabet song with him and then he sang it in Turkish. Then the children showed him some of their favorite songs; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, and Slippery Fish.

What Can Children Make with Floam?

Today in the Walnut room children were busy at the floam table. It has become very popular in our school over the past couple of weeks. They used floam to make many different items such as snow men, snakes, ice-cream bars, balls and many other items. While they were making their items they had a conversation about what everyone was going to make. The children really enjoyed how the floam felt in their hands and were very curious about how sticky it was as they were using it. Let's just say the children are really creative with floam!

Tommy said,"I made a ball right here."
"I make one hamburger for my dad and one for me."
"I made ice cream."
"I made a snow man."

Science Experiments Galore!

This one works, see? - Carter K
There's too much in it - Marcilyn

Today's afternoon centers were filled with a lot of science experiments in the walnut and indoor movement rooms, thanks to the elementary science class (EDU 345) for stopping by. The walnut room had a nice flow of heavy traffic. Children were checking out the magnet tree, magic milk, and the aluminum boats that were in the water tables. The magnet tree involved many types of magnets and they also had a container of water with paper clips in it. The children at this station experimented with the magnets in many different ways. They would try to decide what magnets would be able to pick up the other items and other experiments the students would show the children. The magic milk was an experiment involving milk, dish soap, and food coloring. The students would pour the milk onto a plate for the students and add drops of food coloring. The children would then take a q-tip and place in onto the plate. This created an effect that pushed the colors out and created many designs. Lastly, the children were able to use the water table for something different. The children would either create their own or use a pre-made aluminum foil boat and then test it in the water to see if it would float. They would add fish and other items into the boats to see if they would sink or float. The children had an awesome time experimenting with the students and engaging in new things.

Have a happy Wednesday!

Snow Sampling!

Happy Tuesday!! Before heading inside for lunch today, the children in Pod A were very busy playing together outside. A few children mentioned that they were beginning to feel hungry so they began to taste the snow to tide themselves over for the last few minutes. This group then worked cooperatively to interview the other children to find out what they thought the snow tasted like and what they observed while eating it.

This afternoon in the Oak room children were busy with different materials. Some rolled and molded clay. While a few sketched and painted with the watercolors. Others used the paper table to make various creations with scissors and paper punches.

"This is how you make it flat."
Christopher was using the pine tree as inspiration.
"It's spiky!"
Carter and Cooper were discussing super heroes while using the different shaped paper punches.
Serenity was using colored pencils for her drawing.
"This is a story of a long cat."
