Tuesday June 7, 2011 Pod B

Hello family and friends of the CDLL!
We had a very busy day today in Pod B!  We had two sets of guest speakers come in.  The first set of people that we had come in was from MMR, which is Mobile Medical Response.  One was a paramedic and the other was an EMT.  The children had generated a list of questions to ask them yesterday, so the guest speakers answered the children’s questions and talked about their ambulance and other things that they do.  The children then got to go look at the ambulance!  The children got to go inside and see the different kind of tools that they use.  Some children even got to lay on the bed and have the EMT and paramedic wrap their arm or perform other procedures on the children!

The children who were not currently viewing the ambulance stayed back in the classroom and wrote thank you cards for our guests!

Shortly after our first set of guest speakers left, we had a butterfly releasing party!  Mr. Jonaitis called all of the children out to the playground and all four classroom’s butterflies were released at once.  Some of the butterflies stayed on the teachers’ fingers and had to be coaxed to leave.  The children were very excited to see the butterflies that they have been watching for a few weeks ready to leave.

During lunch, we had six police officers join us.  We pushed the tables together so that the children were closer to the police officers.  The police officers engaged the children in conversation during lunch.  When lunch was finished, the police officers talked to the children about a variety of topics.  They discussed being safe during walks and staying with the teachers and stranger danger.  The children also got to go inside police cars, see the lights and make the noises!  The children were all given pencils that changed color with different temperatures, and they enjoyed touching the pencils to see them change color.  During recall time, we discussed what the children liked and learned from the EMTs and the police officers, and Cormack proudly exclaimed that he had become friends with a police officer!

This afternoon, Sam and Isaac worked hard to make a hotel in the construction area out of large blocks.  They said that their hotel was made for airplanes.

Although it was a very busy day today, the children all seemed to enjoy our guest speakers and all of the activities.  It was hot outside today, but that didn’t keep the children from going outside and playing during the afternoon.  We hope that we can continue to have these exciting opportunities for the children in the future!
Until next Tuesday,
Brooklynn Voyles
