Today, both Pod A and Pod B visited the Farmers Market at Island Park to enjoy some hands on learning. Each small group was given five dollars to find something at the farmers market that they could buy for the entire school.  They spent some time walking around and observing and learning about the items being sold.  After spending their time at the market, the children were able to play on Timber Town Playground.  We had a beautiful day and great weather for our hands on learning.

"This is a bumpy pumpkin. I'll hug it!" ~Lila Beau

After walking through the Market, Ms. Gurskys' small group chose to buy honey for their school.  They would like their classmates to be able to try this honey on bread at snack time.

Children Solving Problems Together!

In the Maple Room, Owen, Stephen, Ayrez, Rohan and Andrew experimented with the blocks while using the toy cars. "I want to build a bridge!" Stephen said. He grabbed a long piece of wood, and balanced one end on the platform and the other on the floor. He took a toy car and placed it at the top. The car traveled down to the floor. "Good job!" Rohan said to Stephen. "We're playing together!" He added. "Woah!" Exclaimed Ayrez, as he watched the car speed down the ramp.

     

Rohan, Owen and Andrew replicated Stephen's ramp, starting with the cars at the top, and watching them roll to the bottom. The cars traveled so fast down the pieces of wood, that they traveled across the floor and the children had to search for their cars amongst the other blocks every time they placed it on the ramp.

 "I lost my car" -Rohan

"Mine too! Where is it at?" -Stephen

"I was looking forever!" -Owen (After he found the car)

"I want car to stop at the bottom!" -Rohan

"I can help!" -Andrew

Andrew took out another block from the shelf, and placed it at the bottom of his ramp.

Rohan placed a car at the top of the long piece of wood, and the children watched as the car sped down and came to a stop at the block on the floor. 

"It stopped!" -Rohan 

"They don't have to look for it anymore?" -Ayrez 

"No, the block stopped the car!" -Andrew

"Wow!" -Stephen

Stephen and Owen both placed blocks at the end of their ramps, and the children watched as their cars traveled down, only to be stopped by the blocks. Rohan and Stephen clapped their hands together, smiling.

How Do Children Coorperate Through Their Play?

Today in the Maple Room Brennen, Aira, Dekyn, and Tommy chose to play with floor toys. The children worked together to build a road. After completing the road the children used the magnetic train cars, and Legos to build vehicles. The children interacted as they played together on the road they constructed.

  Brennen spent a long time playing with the trains. He drove his train on both the road puzzle pieces and the train tracks. Brennen drove his train down the road and noticed Aira driving her train. "Go ahead!" Brennen said to Aira. Brennen stopped his train and let Aira's train drive on the road. 

 

Aira spent her time playing with the animals and trains. She put the animals into the train cars she played with. Dekyn brought his train over and the children began to add animals to Dekyn's train cars. 

"Chicken goes in this!" -Dekyn

"I have a lot of animals!"- Aira 

"I put the sheep right here!"- Dekyn 

 

  

As Brennen continued to drive his train around he noticed that Dekyn was missing a car off of his train. Brennen picked up the train car and attached the car to the end of Dekyn's train.

"I fixed it!" -Brennen 

 

Tommy drove his dinosaur that he created out of Legos around the road. Brennen noticed Tommy driving his dinosaur and asked, "Whats that?" Tommy replied, "Dino Truck!" Brennen commented, "Wow!" Brennen saw a Lego piece on the carpet and asked Tommy, "Look you want this?" He handed Tommy the piece and Tommy said, "Oh thanks!"

Children Working Together as a Team!

In the community small group we read a book about friendships and asked the children what they thought a friend was. The children played a team building game called "Rabbit Hole." The children were the rabbits and had to hop around, while one of the teachers was the fox. When the fox came out the children had to run into their assigned  rabbit hole and all three of the children had to work together to fit in the rabbit hole. (which was a hula hoop)

Sandbox Fun!

The sandbox is always a great place for the children to explore, create, and build. Ari, Grant, and Katherine all spent some time this afternoon exploring the sandbox.The sandbox allows them to practice using their fine motor skills as well as their imagination.

Exploring the New Shed Outside

Outside we have a new shed that has many different items for the children to play with.  The shed has jump ropes, scoop ball, stilts, and different kinds of wings that they can wear.  The children had a blast exploring all of these toys and figuring out how to use them together.

Making Stories with Flashlights!

In the Walnut Room Dakota and Trevor used the Light Studio to make stories about the dinosaurs that were in there. They placed toy dinosaurs on Thermo-Boards and ran a flashlight over the dinosaurs, so when they took the dinosaurs off the boards, their prints were left behind. They placed their dinosaurs on the boards and gave them background stories. When they took the dinosaurs off they could still see what was happening in their story.
