Bonsai tree!

Today during small group Mrs. Nims' group had a special guest. Toga, Ela's dad, came in wit his very special bonsai tree. The children learned that there are many different types of bonsai tree but the one Toga brought was a "Ficus Benjamina"; it's over 50 years old. The children also were able to identify the root, trunk and leaves.

Exploring the Indoor Sandbox!

Today the children were able to play with the indoor sandbox that is in the Walnut Room. They used the shovels, rakes and cups provided to show their creativity.

How Do Children Help Others?

During our time outside many of the children like to build towers with blocks. A child built a tall tower and someone knocked it over and noticed how upset it made them. They expressed that it was an accident and decided to help them re-build it.  A bunch of children came over to help each other.

"I'm helping Harper build his tower" Evie

"Harper's tower is tall, I'm gonna build my own" Trevor

How Do Children Hypothesize?

During Mrs Gursky's small group today, the children worked on making different hypothesis on whether or not an object would sink or float.  

"That will float on the water!"

Everyone was able to put in their guess and the teachers tallied who guessed what.  They would put in their hypothesis, we would test it together and then see who's hypothesis was correct. 

"It's not floating."

After everyone put in an object, they were able to feel what the object felt like after it was taken on by water.

Tumbling Mats!

Today in the indoor movement room, there were tumbling mats for the children to use. There was an arrow that indicated which way the flow of traffic should be and the children were told only one child could be on the mats at a time. Through this activity, the children were able to practice following expectations while working on large motor skills.

Pretending in the Pine Room

Hailee M. and Daniel spent the afternoon in the Pine Room playing at the auto mechanic area. Hailee M. pretended to be the mom and Daniel was the puppy. Hailee M. said they were signing in for work on the papers.

"Mom are we going to work?"

"He's my dad puppy." -Hailee

"I'm her puppy. This is the back of the car. I have all these cars to sign in. I have 1 more left." -Daniel

How Do Children Interact When Playing a Team Game?

Today the children had the choice of going outside for both morning and afternoon center time.One of the choices outside was to play soccer. Micah, Axel, Stephen, Charlie and Daniel all chose to play soccer.

Micah was playing with the soccer ball by himself when he saw Axel walking by. He invited Axel to join him. Axel came over and the children began to play soccer together. 

"You can be the player and I will be the goalie!" -Micah

The nets and soccer balls were moved over to the Zen Garden so that the children could have more room to play. Charlie and Stephen decided to come over to play soccer. Stephen decided to be the goalie while Charlie kicked the ball around.

"When the ball gets close you kick it away!" -Charlie

"Okay!" -Stephen

Daniel chose to play soccer as well. Daniel and Charlie worked together passing the ball to each other. The children kicked the ball back and forth to each other as they ran around and tried to score a goal. Whenever either child made a goal the boys would cheer and run up to each other giving each other a belly bump.
